The history of the local SPD association Lindhorst

Founded in 1919
At the end of the 19th century, Lindhorst was still dominated by agriculture.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the first SPD supporters settled in Lindhorst,
mainly because of the construction of
the Hannover – Minden railway line and the
coal mining industry in the urban hinterland.

In 1919, the supporters joined ranks to form the SPD Lindhorst association.
The founder was the former station master, Mr. Loitsch.
Not only in Lindhorst the SPD became the strongest force during several elections
with results of about  40%.
Because the parish teamed up with the the German National People's Party, it was impossible for the SPD to get a majority for the council.

In 1919, Mr. Loitsch was elected Member of Parliament for Schaumburg-Lippe.
Then he became District Administrator of Bückeburg. At that time, Mr. Wedemeier,
Mr. Kramer and Mr. Duhnsen were still workingf or the SPD.

Until 1932, the SPD achieved around 50% in Lindhorst.

The Nazi Era
Because of  the National Socialism and the consequences involved - such as the prohibition of the SPD
as well as the pursuit of its members - their work had to rest until after the Second World War.

Re-establishment
Among others, Karl Lauenstein, Christoph Koller, Wilhelm Mensching, Wilhelm Stahlhut as well as Fritz Heine where the ones to rebuild the SPD in Lindhorst. Christoph Koller was
Chairman from 1947 until 1953.

Elections in 1954
Because of  immigration the population of Lindhorst increased rapidly during these years.
In 1939, about 1.000 people were living in Lindhorst, whereas in 1954 the number increased to  around 4.000, appr. 3.000 of whom were miners. In November 1954, the midterm elections for the council took place. The SPD won the elections, getting the absolute majority. The party provided 8 out of 15 councillors.

Heinz Schmidt got the lead between 1953 and 1961.
By his initiative the „old playground“ and the
Lindhorster Solarbad were built. The latter was transferred to
the joint community in 1974. On October 14th, 2006 he was
 documentary nominated as honorary chairman.

In addition to his work at today's local  association,
he has been  active in the district board ever
since 60 plus was founded in 1992.

Work priorities / Main priorities
At that time the members of the SPD local association dealt with subjects such as children and youths as well as sports and education.

The former mayor of West Berlin and Ex-Chancellor Willy Brandt with Herbert Saas at the
Magister-Nothold school. Early 1961 in Lindhorst
[ Glück-Auf-Str. / Kornstraße ]

They had a significant stake in the construction of the kindergarten including the youth room,
the school, the sports field as well as the swimming pool.

In addition, the SPD campaigned for the establishment of the local youth council. It was because of their initiative that one of the first children's homes in the rural area was founded. In the early days, Christopher Koller was the president.
On July 11th,, 1953, Heinz Schmidt - still active as honorary chairman in the board of the local association in Lindhorst - took over the presidency. Back then, the council, led by the council members, had to cope with numerous difficult tasks like water supply, waste water disposal and garbage disposal.

During the 50s, the local association had 21 members, whereas they have 85 members today. In 1968, the number of members peaked up to 171. From 1961 until 1972, Helmut Günther took over the presidency of the local association.

His son Andreas Günther,  an active member of the OV
(except for a short period) since 1981, was elected into the county
council in 2006. Thereby he achieved the fourth best result among all
county council's members. This is a highly remarkable result, as it had
been his first-time candidateship. However, he feels that this result is
  an obligation towards the citizens.
In 2011, he is standing for election
to the municipality-citizen champion with 62.46 percent and this could
  decide for themselves!

As mayor, Kurt Reuther has dealt with contemporary issues in Lindhorst since 1991.

One year prior to the local election in 1991,
Kurt Reuther – generally referred to as „our Kurt“ - became mayor
of the community and stayed until 2005.

Thus, the SPD Lindhorst - led by chairman Detlef Klemz (1093-2001) - campaigned for the maintenance of the "old" sports ground at the Lüdersfelderstraße and, subsequently, against the building development of this area.
In 2001 was established on the basis of an initiative of the 'home club' a village renewal program. After approval by the State of Lower Saxony, was started in 2002 with the implementation. Engine of rural renewal was Dziemba Max, who took over the lead with great Engagent. The largest project was the renovation of the old farm of the family Gümmer in the community center. It was the village community center "Gümmer court."
Thus, Kurt Reuther could hand over the mayor's office in the new community centre to Hans-Otto Blume on September 30th ,2005.

The former prime minister of Lower Saxony and

future Chancellor Gerhard Schröder with Hiltrud (Hensen), Alfred Reckmann
and Kurt Reuther in Lindhorst.

Current issues
Basically, the issues of the local association of the SPD have not changed. During the days of  "small funds" working on current issues in Lindhorst continues.
That substantially focus of the SPD is to continue the renovation of villages. The aim is traffic-problems are eliminated, such as the parking situation at the kindergarten and the redevelopment of the market place with a transfer to the central bus station.
After the completion of the village community center "Gümmer yard" with its museum, was
even the school playground and the village hall in the village of Ottensen 2011 repaired. Other activities will follow, as the Final settlement of the mausoleum.
Further activities will follow.
Moreover, the members of the SPD are campaigning in Lindhorst.
Among others,
Sebastian Edathy the federal election campaign and Grant Hendrik Tonne
(Member of Parliament) for various events in Lindhorst.
The district administrator, Heinz-Gerhard Schöttelndreier,  visits on a regular basis. Mainly, however, in connection with village modernization issues.
For the members of the local association, working with local clubs is of utmost importance.
This involves, for example, the refuse collection organised by the TuS Jahn-Lindhorst.
Various public events related to the Lindhorst SPD do not just happen during election times
instead of election campaigns. Events are announced in each of the display cases and online

www.spd-lindhorst.de
The website (spd-lindhorst-sgv.de) went online as a B-version on the1st of January in 2006. Since then our web-master Klaus Baxmann is working on its further development.
Partially, these events, such as the annual bicycle tour with a barbecue are very important for the inhabitants of Lindhorst.
On the 14th of October in 2007 BINGO was successfully put into practice for the first time.
The event now takes place every year because it appeals to „young“ and „old“.
The abundance of funds is inured to the benefits of a club.

Ideas of Detlef Klemz about the political honorary office:
Mainly because of  the small size of Lindhorst, chances to fill the honorary office with life are great. Thereby the citizens can directly feel and see what is done.

A walk through the village, an excursion always provides the evidence for our public responsiveness in daily life.
Consistently there are conversations with the citizens of Lindhorst like, for example in the  "Klartext", where they announce their views concerning our political work. Thereby, I think it is very important and perfectly finde that they do not always agree with everything we do or say. This way it is possible to know precisely what the citizens of Lindhorst require.
Moreover, it is also possible to clear out misunderstandings and you get the chance to explain yourself.

Detlef Klemz  - member of the OV-Lindhorst since  1986
and since this year to 2006 in the party leadership of the OV.
